Unlike IPv4 in which you specify a gateway either by dhcp or statically, in IPv6, the routers do that. So there is no analogy to an IPv4 gateway to route off network. On an IPv6 network you can set static addresses, no problem at all, an in fact all IPv6 devices will inherently have a link local address starting with fe80:xxxx. You can also add a static ip address as another primary address. The big problem here is that the mindset of how IPv6 works is different than IPv4. It is not just a bigger address space.
